Jesus Christ "The Anapeson" icon
Orthodox icon of Anapeson (Jesus Christ Reclining).
In the icon "Anapeson", also known as the Sleeping eye, Christ is depicted as a peaceful sleeping child. It is called Anapeson in greek meaning reclining. The icon recalls the prophecy of Jacob (Genesis 49:9): 'Judah is a lion's whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?'" The first known icon of "Anapeson" is in the Pantokrator Monastery of Mt. Athos and dates from the late thirteenth century. Contemporary icon.
