Theotokos Pelagiotissa (of The Sea) icon
Orthodox icon of Theotokos "of The Sea", "Pelagonitissa", icon of early 15th cent.
This exquisitely painted icon, surely made for intimate devotion, displays the iconographic type known as the Pelagonitissa, after Pelagonia in medieval Serbia. The "Pelogonitissa" shows Virgin Mary gazing pensively over the head of the bare-legged Child who rises in a serpentine twist, His unhealed head bent back against her mouth and His left hand on her cheek, while she traps one leg and supports Him on a golden cloth.
